![]() Part of me is intrigued by the Epson printer because of favorable reviews and the lower price, but also a part of me wants to give HP another chance since it has been several years since I bought my last HP printer. As a short term solution, I bought a $50 Canon MP495 printer from Wal-Mart that has given me no issues whatsoever, however, just severely lacking on the performance and quality printing/scanning part. At this point it had gone from an "all-in-one" printer to a barely functioning scanner. I bought a whole new set of brand new ink cartridges hoping that would work, and the printer would say that all the ink was gone and refuse to print. Then most recently, none of the ink cartridges will work. HP would release updated software and the problem would still remain. HP's website and customer service was terrible to work with, and I was only able to find a solution through google and forums with other people having the same issue. I would scan an item and it wouldn't show up. Like really? And then going from Windows XP to Vista at the time was also a nightmare as it took forever to find a fix for it to work properly. ![]() I would try to print a black only text document, but couldn't because the cyan would be out. The ink was annoying to deal with, as it wouldn't let you print if any of the cartridges were out, too low, or expired. However, my last HP printer (HP Photosmart C6180), was a nightmare after about a couple years of using it. Normally I would jump onto HP, as all my previous printers have been HP. I can't figure out the winner here between the two. But then again, I don't think this particular printer was made for that. I'd like to assume both printers should be able to print 4 x 6 photos pretty well, but I think I read somewhere that Epson does a noticeably better job with photos. I do plan to print plenty of 4 x 6 photos, this feature is probably more important to my wife. What does that exactly mean? HP's printer advertises 4800 x 4800 dpi for both optical and enhanced. I noticed the Epson only has resolution to 2400 x 2400 dpi for hardware, but max says 9600 x 9600 dpi interpolated. ![]() I just want a great all-around printer that prints documents both well and fast, prints good photos, and also has a good scanner. The price difference isn't really a factor for me. Best Buy has the Epson 845 for $139.99 on their website and the HP 8600 Plus for $229.99. ![]()
